Recent Activities

INVESTITURES OF BRAVERY AWARDS were conducted by a number of provincial
Lieutenants Governor.  These Ceremonies saw 31 Honorary Testimonial
Certificates, 32 Bronze and 8 Silver Medals issued to Canadian heroes.

                                                                                                               

Highlights

 

May 30 - torrents of ice-cold runoff water of the Similkameen River in B.C. trapped an elderly motorist in this car. A Hydro worker tied together 4 lengths of hose and used these as a safety line to swim downstream to the victim. The driver was removed from the car, tied to the line and pulled to shore by other bystanders. The rescuer was forced to swim and was swept some 200 meters downstream before reaching safety. A Bravery Medal will be issued by the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. 

 

May 25th- Ontario Investiture.  A rescue attempt by an 11 year old of his 15-year-old friend who had fallen through the ice on a pond in Scarborough led to the death of both boys. The parents of the 11-year-old rescuer received the Silver Medal (posthumous), while members of the Toronto Police and a bystander received Bronze Medals or Honorary Testimonial Certificates for their efforts.

 

 

Bronze Medal recipient with Alberta Lieutenant Governor. Ten year old boy who fought off a coyote in his back yard that was attacking his friend in Edmonton on November 18.

 

Silver Medal recipient with Alberta Lieutenant Governor. On July 25, the recipient from Alberta, spent 6 hours attempting to rescue 5 teenagers involved in a truck accident. The vehicle drove over a high cliff on the California coast, became airborne, and landed upside-down in the surf, some 120 meters below. He climbed down the cliff and managed to rescue 3 of the victims from various locations on the cliff face. The remaining 2 victims were pinned by the truck in the ocean and despite the rescuer’s desperate attempts to free them, they both perished.
